The Mini resumes will be collected online through January 31, 2021. Following that, the data will be compiled as part of an online database and shared with all public school districts in Illinois. Superintendents, principals, and others who make hiring decisions in a school district will have access to review all mini resumes.

The Student Education Association (SEA) at Governors State University (GSU) is part of a network of state organizations that promote education and support teachers, social workers, school counselors and others working in the field of education. SEA hosts and takes part in many events each semester.

On Tuesday, September 17th, 2019 from 4:30-6:30 pm, SEA leader, Katie Zalkowski will lead a teacher panel in the E-Lounge at GSU.  Dr. Katy E. Hisrich, SEA faculty advisor, is organizing and marketing our event to students and faculty across the university. Students with any major are welcome to RSVP and attend this informative event. Event attendees can hear from first-year teachers, student teachers, current teachers, principals, and educational specialists. Topics covered at the event include, but are not limited to: edTPA, student teaching, first year teaching, job applications, specialty fields in education. Attendees can ask questions and receive informed advice. Attendees who are members of the Student Education Association can receive free pizza. The event will be a great opportunity to meet SEA members, enjoy food, and gain helpful insights for success in the field of education. Students are required to RSVP to Caitlin Rich by September 16th with their name, email, and major.

Sensational Teacher Conference!

On Friday & Saturday, Feb 8-9, IEA hosted a conference for future teachers in Bloomington, IL. The two-day conference was meant to help attendees prepare for the teaching profession.

SEA/KDP leaders and members attended a multitude of sessions that covered various topics including student teaching, addressing controversial topics in the classroom, integrating the Arts, understanding the basics of a first year teacher’s contract, incorporating movement and brain breaks, student engagement, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, etc. The sessions were led by current teachers and administrators.

In addition to the sessions, attendees had the opportunity to meet and talk with retired teachers from the IEA Retired Mentor Program. Throughout the conference, current education students were able to enter tickets into a raffle to win teacher-supply bundles/prizes donated generously by the retired teachers. IEA members who are graduating in May received their honorary cords.

As always, the IEA Student Conference was very beneficial and succeeded in providing future teachers with useful information and advice. SEA & KDP would like to thank IEA and the IEA officer team for a sensational experience that will truly be unforgettable!

IEA Advisory Board Meeting – Lombard, IL

On January 26, 2019, the SEA/KDP leader team including Jessica White, Michelle Westergaard, Aimee York, Hailey Czerwinski, Sireen Hamarshah, Keelin Crotty, Kia Taylor, and Kaitlyn Zalkowski met with all of the other IEA leaders from other universities throughout the state of Illinois in Lombard, IL. There was a panel of three guest teachers, group activities, and important discussions regarding race and diversity in the classroom. Thank you to IEA for hosting a wonderful meeting! We look forward to the IEA conference in February.

Bloomington, IL – IEA Student Conference

On February 8 & 9, the Illinois Education Association (IEA) will be hosting it’s annual student conference for educators which will take place at the Doubletree by Hilton in Bloomington, IL. On Friday, Feb 8, the sessions are from 3-9pm. On Saturday, Feb 9, the sessions run from 7:30am-3:30pm.

The registration deadline is Monday, February 4, 2019 which can be completed online. Students will have to pay a small fee. Registering between January 9-31 will cost $15. Depending on whether students are commuting or staying the night in the hotel, the total cost will vary. For a breakdown of the pricing, please click here.

On February 8 & 9, the Illinois Education Association (IEA) will be hosting it’s annual student conference for educators which will take place at the Doubletree by Hilton in Bloomington, IL.

This conference is for future teachers throughout Illinois. All students who are in or entering education programs at colleges and universities around the state are encouraged to attend. The conference consists of several professional development sessions/seminars on various teaching topics and will offer attendees breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

On Friday, Feb 8, the sessions are from 3-9pm. On Saturday, Feb 9, the sessions run from 7:30am-3:30pm. Although they are able to commute, students will be given the opportunity to stay the night at the hotel, which is highly encouraged. The dress code for the conference is business attire.

Student IEA Conference – REGISTER NOW!

The Student Illinois Education Association (IEA) 2018 Spring Conference will be held on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7, 2018. All Governors State students in SEA who are planning a career as a future teacher are encouraged to attend.

The conference is split into TWO days:

  1. April 6 – SERVICE PROJECT @ Hubble Middle School in Warrenville from 12-3:15pm. Conference attendees will work with middle school students at multiple stations, leading activities such as craft projects, read alouds, games, etc. Dinner buffet will be provided. One-night stay in a hotel (optional).
  2. April 7 – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT @ the Hilton Hotel in Lisle/Naperville from 8:45am-3:15pm (3003 Corporate West Drive
    Lisle, Illinois 60532 USA). Those who register for this event will get to choose what elective sessions they would like to attend. These sessions include discussions about how to develop student assessments, how the law will impact teaching, effective classroom management strategies, classroom communities, and teaching with technology. In addition, attendees can choose to go to either an elementary teacher panel or a middle and high school teacher panel. Breakfast and lunch buffets will be provided.

Literacy Projects – MARCH

The Student Education Association (SEA) and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society (KDP) at Governors State University will host a Literacy Project that takes place throughout the month of March. The project will celebrate the nationwide Read Across America (NEA) and Literacy Alive! (KDP). Student leaders and other volunteers will be reading and facilitating literacy activities at four different sites:

South Suburban PADS (4411 W. Gatling Blvd, Country Club Hills)
Thursday, March 1st from 4-6pm

The Garden of Prayer Youth Center (657 E. Court Street, Kankakee)
Friday, March 2nd from 4-6pm

Together We Cope (17010 Oak Park, Tinley Park)
Thursday, March 8th from 4-6pm

Ronald McDonald House (211 E. Grand Ave, Chicago)
Friday, March 23rd from 7:30-9pm

Literacy activities will vary by location but will include an assortment of read-alouds, book creations, and crafts. All materials will be provided for the activities and then donated to the location at the culmination of the event. We are collecting children’s books (new and used, in good condition) throughout the month of February to donate to these shelters and centers.
