Project Learning Tree Training Workshop to be February 19, 2018

Screen Shot 2018-01-29 at 11.57.39 AMA Project Learning Tree (PLT) training workshop will be held at Governors State University on February 19, 2018 from 8:30am-12:00pm in the Literacy Zone. This is hosted by the Student Education Association and Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education.  Project Learning Tree is the environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation and is sponsored in Illinois by the Environmental Education Association of Illinois. Elementary & Early Childhood Educators & Teacher Candidates (undergraduate and graduate students) are invited to attend this hands-on workshop investigating environmental topics through indoor and outdoor activities. Educators will learn to integrate environmental education, literature, math and social sciences into an existing curriculum with nature as the medium.

Dr. Colleen Sexton (Associate Provost) is the trainer for this workshop. She was a National PLT Educator and an Ohio PLT Educator. The cost for this workshop is $22 per person, which includes materials, an activity guide, resources, training, certification, and a snack. Seats are limited and will be first filled by members of the Student Education Association and Kappa Delta Pi. Career Workshop Success

The Student Education Association (SEA) at Governor’s State University (GSU) hosted a career and resume workshop on Thursday, January 25 from 4-6pm in F1622 and the Lakeside Lounge. This workshop was a joint effort between the Student Education Association (SEA), Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Psi Chi Psychology National Honor Society, and the Psychology club at GSU. Students from across the university, including individuals within the Division of Education, Division of Social Work, and Division of Psychology and Counseling, attended this event. School administrators, psychologists, graduate school representatives, and student graduates provided beneficial information regarding: creating resumes, interviews, job and graduate school applications. Presenters at the event also provided tips on when to apply for positions and how to stand out from other applicants. The second part of this event included small group consultations and work sessions. In the work sessions students were able to receive individualized help with their resumes from experienced faculty and staff. A special thank you to our presenters, including school administrators Dr. LaMonica Williams and Dr. Saundra Mickles, counselors Kalyna Brumfield and Amina Dahleh, GSU Career Center representative Cynthia Staples, and recent GSU graduate Kinga Drag.

Want to judge a science fair?

Science Fair Judges Needed in Park Forest & Chicago Heights! 

The Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 will have student Science Fairs in our schools during 2018.  We would like to invite you to participate with our young scientists by judging our student’s work as they present to you their Science Fair Projects.  You do not have to be a scientist to participate!  We begin the judging with an informational presentation where you will receive an explanation of our judging rubric.   We will then adjourn to the gymnasium for approximately an hour where each judge will be assigned four to five students to judge.

SEA Career Workshop: January 25, 2018

The Student Education Association (SEA) and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society (KDP) at Governor’s State University will be hosting a career and resume workshop on Thursday, January 25 from 4-6pm in the E-lounge. SEA’s current president, Stephanie Henning, will be acting as host for the event. The workshop will be a joint effort between the SEA, Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Psi Chi Psychology National Honor Society, and the Psychology club at GSU. All students from across the university, including individuals within the Division of Education, Division of Social Work, and Division of Psychology and Counseling are encouraged to attend.

Presenters include school administrators, psychologists, graduate school representatives, and student graduates in the field of psychology and education. They will provide useful information on resume formatting, content, and cover letters. They will also provide resume and interview tips, as well as advice on when to apply for positions and how to stand out from other applicants.

Additionally, information and guidance on applying to graduate school will be provided.  Student attendees will be encouraged to ask questions. The second part of this event will include small group consultations and work sessions. In the work sessions, students will be able to receive individualized help with their resumes from experienced faculty and staff. Any student who wishes to receive advice on improvements should bring their resume to the event.
