“The Journey of a Book Starts with a Word” Reading Showcase – Wednesday, April 6, 2016
This spring, the Student Education Association is teaming up with Foundations 4 AdVANCEment to host the second annual “The Journey of a Book Starts with a Word” Reading Showcase.
The event will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 from 9am-3pm in the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. Students (Preschool to First Grade) will compete in a three part competition; any student in these grades is allowed to participate. The first event includes a one on one assessment of students’ phonemic awareness, and phonics skills; fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Next, students will present an illustrated book report. Finally students will be tested on sight words and allowed only five seconds per word to respond. Students earn points for each correct answer given within the allotted time. All participants will receive a T-shirt and the top three finishers will be awarded a trophy and cash prize. The goal of the event is to promote reading and showcase student work.
Join us April 6th for fun and learn about the great work students have accomplished this year.
Students who are interested in participating, please contact Foundations for AdVANCEment or Dr. Katy Hisrich (khisrich@govst.edu). The SEA is looking for volunteers to help at this event, even it is just for a few hours. Please contact Katy Hisrich (khisrich@govst.edu) if you are interested in volunteering at GSU on April 6th.
